As a personal tribute to Ron G, Doo Wop, and Kid Capri I completed the first of an upcoming series of blend tapes (track listing and dl link at the bottom of this post). Those familiar with these names understand the attention they deserve.
The blend tapes that I spent a lot of time listening to in the early to mid 90s were predominately R&B acapellas over Hip Hop instrumentals. They were usually done LIVE on 3 turntables. This was YEARS (well over a decade) before the term "mash up" saw the light of day.
(this interview took place in 1992)
(this Kid Capri demo also took place in '92)
At the time New Jack Swing was the big thing, and these blend tapes changed the face of contemporary R&B forever (see Mary J Blige's "What's the 411" for further proof of this) as it helped cause the shift from Teddy Riley's signature New Jack Swing over to the Hip Hop infused (i.e. utilizing more sampled breaks) genre that we know today.
