I'll spare you the long story behind me acquiring this cassette, but I do have to give a big shout out to my good friend John John who originally gave me this tape pre interweb. Today we have places like Deep House Page and Victor Simonelli's online collection of mixtapes where anyone can easily find recordings like this that were once considered to be quite rare.

As you can see not a lot of information about this recording was provided, but I'm guessing from the tracklisting that this took place around '82 (which happens to be the year that Frankie Knuckles left the Warehouse, creating even more questions about the origins of this cassette - was this recorded at the Warehouse? The Power Plant?). I converted it to a 256 bitrate MP3, but keep in mind that this was transfered from a cassette that was recorded from another cassette that was recorded from another cassette, etc. Enjoy!

De La Soul, Live in L.A., 1996

Here's an exceptionally energetic De La performance that I recorded off of the radio pre "Stakes Is High" (Power 106 to be exact shout out to the Baka Boys). There is a short interview at the end of part one, and the show continues again at part two. Sandwiched in the recording is a Redman/Method Man St. Ides commercial and a Beatnuts promo. Enjoy!

Industry insiders associate the name Mr. Peabody with quality, hard to find music. Your favorite DJ's and producers buy their dusties from them ("Disco Spectrum" anyone?). Mr. Peabody the record store has been a Chicago Southside institution for over 15 years - just being in that store for 10 minutes is a lesson in itself!

Most of what Mr. Peabody the DJs play in their sets come from the era spanning from the 70s to 80s and specializing in the obscure, but browsing around their amazing store I also came across a really nice selection of Jazz, old school Hip Hop, and rock 12" singles, so don't base their stock solely on what they play out. Here is the link to the store website. I would imagine the turnover for their stock to be quite quick, so giving them a call or emailing them your want lists might be good idea.

Originally produced by Curtis Mayfield and released on the legendary Curtom label (you can really hear it in the flute lines). A couple of decades later "reissued" as a 45 RPM 12" single a couple of years ago by some record store out of New York (a sonically beautiful pressing I might add). Unfortunately this was to be the label's one and only release.

In the conclusion of the interview Jarrell breaks it down and connects the dots at the same time.
"So you guys were doing the Hip Hop and R&B thing before Teddy and pretty much laid the ground work for what Teddy did some years later with Keith Sweat with Make It Last Forever."

Make It Last Forever contained a song called "I Want Her", which pretty much spawned this, and where would the career of many Hip Hop and R&B artists today be had Full Force and/or New Jack Swing never existed?

But to get nerdy/technical the sample on Doc Scott's record sounds like it's actually taken from this (with the "Can U Feel It" acapella "in the beginning" of it, and I'm thinking this to be true because of the "phase one" and "phase two" vocal samples).



Which brings us back to Logic's "The Final Frontier" being based around a sample of Mr Fingers "Can U Feel It".

And the cycle continues...

Loin Brothers "Garden of Vargulf" EP

Pioneers of the Outback Disco/Agircultural House movement triumphantly return with this future classic 4 tracker.

"Vargulf, the wolf who slaughters for pleasure, lures you deep into his private oasis with Sydney bush bashers The Loin Brothers providing the sound track. The original mix is a Cerrone-esque disco odyssey featuring a rolling bass line and orchestral strings which slides into a howling guitar solo climax. The Acid Re-Rub expresses the will of Vargulf through sweaty acid lines, storming piano stabs peaking with a frantic instrumental feeding frenzy.

Garden of Vargulf is the much anticipated follow up release from The Loins’ 'Heavy Helmet', which featured a remix by Mock N Toof. Heavy Helmet caught the attention of artists such as Aeroplane, Ewan Pearson and Ivan Smagghe, with Smagghe featuring the remix on his Live at Robert Johnson mix."

"Walter Gibbons remains one of the most important and unheralded DJ / remixers in New York dance music history, a pioneer of reel to reel edits and the art of the remix and a tangible link between early hip hop and disco through his quickfire turntable skills developed during the mid-‘70s.

At his famed residency at Galaxy 21 (alongside a then young percussionist, Francois Kevorkian), Gibbons perfected his turntable prowess, mixing two copies of records seamlessly at a similar time to Kool Herc’s famed block parties across town in the Bronx in 1975. He was among the first to make his own reel to reel edits of tracks, extending breaks and restructuring tracks specifically for the dancefloor. As a direct result, he was the first DJ to be granted access to multi-track tapes as Ken Cayre’s Salsoul Records brought him in to re-work Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ in ‘76, a mix that would set the blueprint for disco, the 12” format and all future dance music mixes.

Gibbons would become a prolific remixer for Salsoul and developed a style his contemporaries called ‘Jungle Music’, a raw, uncompromising approach to DJ-ing and mixing which often extended tracks to 10 minutes plus with tribal percussion breaks and off-the-cuff, unexpected production touches. This compilation focuses on some of the more adventurous and ground-breaking mixes that Gibbons produced during the disco era including a freeform treatment of Dinosaur L’s ‘Go Bang’, Paradise Garage favourite ‘You Are My Love’ by Sandy Mercer and underground disco rarity, ‘I’ve Been Searching’ by Arts & Craft.

Into the ‘80s, Gibbons continued to break new ground. One of his recognised classics, ‘Set It Off’ by Strafe, fused electro, disco and New York post-punk in a genius re-work, later reprised on the proto-house version he recorded as Harlequin Fours with a young Barbara Tucker on vocals. He also worked with Arthur Russell during the mid-‘80s and became one of the only remixer / producers that Russell would trust with his work. Gibbons’ mixes of Indian Ocean’s ‘Treehouse / School Bell’ and Russell’s ‘Let’s Go Swimming’ are now acknowledged classics. We feature here the exclusive unreleased Russell track ‘See Through’, a brilliant minimal electro piece.

Walter Gibbons found religion and had stopped producing by 1986, although he continued to DJ with a much heavier slant towards gospel. He died of AIDS-related illness in 1994. This is the first multi-label compilation of his work to be released and features rare photos and a biography by Tim Lawrence, author of ‘Love Saves The Day’ and the recent Arthur Russell biography ‘Hold On To Your Dreams’."

"Wally Badarou was born 1955 in Paris. Although he planned a career as a pilot, he was seduced by synthesizers and rock & roll, eventually becoming a well-known session keyboardist in England and his own Nassau, Bahamas, studio. Badarou's early career included work with M (on the hit "Pop Music"), Joe Cocker, Herbie Hancock, and Island Records artists like Grace Jones, Black Uhuru, and the British funk band Level 42. In addition to his production and keyboard work for Level 42, he has done several film scores, most notably Kiss of the Spider Woman. You can hear both the rhythmic sensitivity of his African heritage and the harmonic sensibility of his classical training in his music. His expressive and sophisticated synthesizer textures are full of life, especially on his more dance-oriented Echoes album. In the nineties he released two albums, 1991's Chief Inspector and 1997's So Why."

Here he talks about his introduction to Sly & Robbie, working with Grace Jones, going to the Paradise Garage, the Padlock project, etc.

There are two versions of this single. The more common original version that I've heard most people play, and the promo only remix version. Both are quite similar with the original version sounding like the more stripped down version.

The Baka Boyz were a duo of Hip Hop DJs from Bakersfield, California that held down a specialty mix show (non commercial) on Power 106 in L.A. and later on at KMEL in the Bay all through the 90s til 2005. You can read more about them on their website.

This show's guests are members of Wu, Mobb Deep, and J Rocc of the Beat Junkies. There is some static on the tape that goes on for about the first 10 minutes.

Jackin for Blend Tapes

As a personal tribute to Ron G, Doo Wop, and Kid Capri I completed the first of an upcoming series of blend tapes (track listing and dl link at the bottom of this post). Those familiar with these names understand the attention they deserve.

The blend tapes that I spent a lot of time listening to in the early to mid 90s were predominately R&B acapellas over Hip Hop instrumentals. They were usually done LIVE on 3 turntables. This was YEARS (well over a decade) before the term "mash up" saw the light of day.
